“Guess what! My body tells me which food is good for me. When I eat the right
food I feel great. It’s like having my own special racing car formula!” ~ Excerpt
from Oscar’s Lunchbox
Oscar’s Lunchbox also contains a special underlying message for children and adults alike, reminding us to look past clever marketing and flavour enhancers when making food choices. By stopping to feel the messages from his body, Oscar makes a connection between what he eats and how he feels. And if he wants to feel great he learns that he has to follow these messages. The wisdom contained in Oscar’s Lunchbox can be used as a fundamental tool for developing life long healthy eating habits.
Author Pam Houssenloge hopes Oscar’s Lunchbox will be utilized by health professionals, dieticians, nutritionists, childcare providers, and teachers in preschool and school settings to support children to make better food choices.

Oscar’s Lunchbox was a wonderful read. I have four children aged from 5 to 11 and we all read it with great interest. I loved the premise of the “boring lunchbox” and that the child’s feelings about it were actually acknowledged. While the lunchbox was “boring” because of food intolerances, the book also taught the reader WHY everyone should have a healthy lunchbox.
The quality of the book couldn’t be faulted. The illustrations were simple yet effective, the colours were bright and kept the kids interested and font was easy to read.
My kindergarten daughter wants me to take it to school for her teacher to read to everyone and I think this book would be an excellent way for teachers to discuss the topic of allergies and intolerances AND the benefits of a healthy lunchbox.
As most schools are allergy friendly these days, I would recommend that everyone with young children read this with their child. It can sometimes be hard to explain WHY they can’t have peanut butter etc at school, so this book is a great starting point to help.
